Rules & Scoring for All Leagues

RULES FOR INDIVIDUAL DEFENSIVE PLAYERS

Just to whet yer whistle, here are some of the new things in store for you this season.

Based on some feedback from last season, I have been talking with some folks about ways to make Divisions more important, and ways to keep people involved all year long. Certainly the waiver wire is one method, but I also wanted to liven up some of our prizes.

With that in mind - here are the Awards for both leagues along with the prize money you will receive. The idea is to get creative - award teams for excellent drafting, for consistent top scoring across divisions, etc. New awards have more explanation below in the fine print.

Third place is based on total season record (regular plus playoffs). Ties are broken based on total points scored all season.

Division Champs win the regular season win/loss record in their division. Ties are broken based on total points scored. There will be three division champs in each league

Best Trade Award goes to the team that executes the best fantasy trade of the year.

Hard Luck Award goes to the team most beset by injuries, circumstances or just pure bad luck.

Rookie Of The Year award goes to the team that first drafted or acquired the most valuable fantasy rookie of the season (trades don't count - only the transaction which initially installs the rookie on a team's roster is recognized).

Highest Score of the Year goes to the team that scores the most points across the regular season weeks. Each week 1 point is awarded to the team (regardless of division) that scores the highest score. In event of tie, 1 point is awarded to all teams who tied for the highest score. At the end of the regular season, these points are totalled up and the award is given to the team with the most consistent record of Highest Score. Note: it is NOT given just to the team that has the highest regular season point total - it is a consistency award for maintaining a high scoring average across weeks.

The following process will be used to determine the winners: At the end of the fantasy season, all owners will be given a chance to nominate their respective choices for each award. The nominations are not mandatory, but expected as part of active league participation. There will be a limit of four finalists per award, as selected by the Commissioner based on the quantity/quality of nominations received. The four finalists for each award will then be presented for voting to the entire league. Each owner will assign each finalist from four to one point(s), four points being the best choice, and one point being the worst choice. The finalist with the highest total number of points will be declared the winner. Please note that since the awards are subjective, they may not be the most logical or statistically based, although all owners are expected to vote impartially and rationally.

 

Scoring Rules for Starting Defensive Players in Leagues:

  • Touchdown Scored: 6 points

  • Forced Fumble: 3 points

  • Interception: 3 points

  • Sack (Solo or Assist): 2 points

  • Assist Tackle: 1 point

  • Solo Tackle: 1.5 points (rounded up)

Why this scoring?  Well, after looking at random weekly performance of the tops individually in tackling, interceptions, sacks, etc. (players like Ray Lewis, LaRoi Glover, Derrick Brooks, Eric Allen) this combination of scoring seemed to allow consistently between 10-20 points per week for player, with peak performance at 25-30 points.  This is consistent with the sort of scoring seen out of other 'skill' positions like RB. Some players had weeks of 2 or 3 pts.  Others averaged over 20 per week.  That's what Fantasy Football is all about.  At 120 solo tackles a year plus another 50 assists for the tops individually in both AFC and NFC, that means a top flight individual defense player should get around 220-250 points over a season - which puts them below top flight QBs and RBs, but in the second tier of scorers.

That's the sort of skill player addition I was looking for to add variety to draft day and to the waiver wire.

How Will We Draft Them?  Draft will happen as with all other skill positions.  Rosters will be enlargened to accomodate 18 players - giving you 3 additional slots over the 15 previous.  That should give you both enough room to draft defensive stars, as well as tack a flyer on a rookie RB from McNeese State.

Who Do We Draft?  Any player playing defensive position on a regular NFL team is available.  Linebackers, Middle Linebackers, Defensive Linemen, Ends, Corners, Safeties, etc. are all eligible to be drafted.  Scoring should be balanced enough not to favor pass rushers or linemen at the expense of their more fleet-of-foot brethren.

WAIVER WIRE WINDOWS & PROCESSING

As a league we have passed a waiver wire rule to limit wiavers based on record. Here is the critieria I plan on using next season to set this up. This may change based on feedback, or based on changes in how the software works - but at least you know my thinking now!

WAIVER WIRE

There will be a Waiver Wire time-limit. Any waiver claims will be processed by owners up to a midnight-Wednesday night cutoff. At Wednesday all waiver claims will be processed by 1) Overall winning percentage 2) Divisional winning percentage 3) total points score3d. This means that the team with the worst winning % will get their wiaves processed first.

A second wiaver window will occur from midnight Wed thru midnight Saturday night. This window will allow teams to process a last-minute claim for a player. Claims will be processed in the same manner as window #1.

With all claims it is possible for an owner to put in several requests and rank them. I would strongly suggest this if you badly need to fill a position, and aren't sure if your first claim will succeed before game kickoff.
